Comment on Tremors at Rapid City Medical Library by RCRH Patient

Closure of the medical library is just one of a laundry list of things RCRH is doing to slash costs. They have cut a number of lesser-known services to patients, staff, and the community, in addition to the more common pay cuts, hiring freezes, and leave cancellations.

This is truly unfortunate. Not long ago, I found myself in a hospital far away from home, desperate for information about a diagnosis and its treatment. The library and resource office of the facility we were in was excellent. I suppose I could've found a local public library, but it would've been with much bother, and at the expense of the care of my loved one.

With RCRH serving such a large geographic area, I wonder how many people will go without the information they will so desperately seek?

Yes, there is the internet. The internet is often the error-net though, and I have greater confidence in a hospital library than a random websearch.

Further, having spent a lot of time in RCRH over the years, their patient web access is spotty at best. If they're cutting sprinkles from the donuts in the cafeteria, I suspect they're not upgrading WiFi in the hospital either.

[...] As I’ve blogged before, when something comes up twice in a short period of time, it’s appropriate to take notice of what the universe would like me to hear or learn. These 2 ladies had great influence in my early passion to play organ. Not because they were my teachers, but because they inspired me with their passion for sharing their music. I’ve played all my life, but the last few years other things have taken precedence, and sometimes weeks go by without the feel of ebony and ivory. There is no balance in my life, and I feel like I’m not whole without my music. Thank you for the memories, dear friends, and for leading me back to my center. [...]

Thank you for the detailed history of the process. I appreciate all your encouragement and time spent making it happen. What a huge blessing! We're working out details and tweaking connections here and there, but we have time before school starts in August. Mollie Pherson kept the project on track, and kept us informed every step of the way.

The fundamentals of customer service in play at libraries are universal for the many service professions, including LE. The real challenge of the latter is that quality customer service must be delivered to involuntary recipients as well as those seeking services. And where it should fail in some aspect, the cost is not the loss of the customer, but the loss of they who deliver the product.

Blessings upon the many who step forward each day...all public safety...to sustain we all who hope to go home each night.
